Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (IATA: DTW, ICAO: KDTW) is the primary international airport located in Romulus, Michigan, Detroit suburb. The airport is regarded not only as the busiest airport of Michigan but also as one of the largest airline hubs within the United States. The airfield became the Detroit's main airport and was named Detroit-Wayne Major Airport in 1947. Meanwhile, to increase the efficiency of the airport, three new runways 3L/21R and 9L/27R, and 4R/22L were built in 1950.
In 1958, the airport was officially included in the list of American airports that received new long-range radar equipment. That allowed the airbase to become the first airport in the United States that may host jet airliners. That year the South or L.C. Smith terminal was constructed, and the airport was given its current name.
The North Terminal or the Davey Terminal was opened for the public's attention in 1966. Later, in 1974, the third terminal or the Michael Berry terminal was opened as well. Additionally, new parallel runway 9R/27L was added to the three existing ones in 1993.
The last runway 4L/22R was officially presented in December 2001. Moreover, the McNamara Terminal was opened in 2002. As time went by, the runways' names were changing. Thus, the runway 3/21 became 3L/21R in 1950, 3/21 became 3R/21L, 3R/21L was changed to 3C/21C in 1976, 3C/21C became 3L/21R in 2011 after the splitting into sectors, etc.
